    Matthew Tyrmand

    Deputy Director

    Matthew Tyrmand currently serves as Deputy Director at Large of American Transparency/OpenTheBooks.com. He grew up in Brooklyn, New York & after surviving the NYC public school system he attended the University of Chicago. After graduating in 2003 he spent his twenties working on Wall Street as a hedge fund portfolio manager where he analyzed & traded healthcare & telecommunications stocks and derivatives. After the 2008/2009 financial meltdown the financial markets became a less gratifying place for him to be involved thanks to large scale govt intervention. In 2011 he left Wall Street and started his own consulting firm to help small and medium sized enterprises grow their businesses and in 2013 he joined a new 501c3 called American Transparency with the mission of putting all government spending online in one repository called OpenTheBooks.com. Since he joined founder and executive director Adam Andrzejewski in helping grow this entity, his roles have encompassed public relations, media engagement, strategy, litigation analysis, development, coalition building and many other ad hoc responsibilities. Matthew is the son of the well known Polish mid 20th century writer, political critic, and anti communist dissident Leopold Tyrmand and in 2011 Matthew obtained Polish citizenship. He is active in the Polish civil debate and as a private equity investor in Central/Eastern Europe. His criticism of the corruption in Polish government and the nationalization of the private pension system has gotten much domestic press and he writes a column for the #2 Polish daily; Superexpress. He joined the Board of Directors of Project Veritas in mid 2014 after working with James O’Keefe/PV both in a consulting capacity and in providing contextualizing spending data in PV investigations. He believes that the impact that PV and OTB have both separately and in conjunction with each other are second to none within the movement to hold government accountable for its venality.
