How important is the message of this book? Consider this: There is nothing on this planet that is not touched in some way by business and the activity of business. Business and its activity are the most pervasive and prevalent force on the planet today. How businesses are managed and led literally determines the wealth, health and well-being of everything on our planet. With this in mind it becomes incumbent on the leaders of businesses to ensure that the activities of their organizations are structured in ways that follow the admonishment of Hippocrates to “first do no harm.” The fact that this is not the focus of most organizations poses a considerable challenge to leaders who aspire to inspire others and to do good works. It is also a major reason for what is essentially a pandemic of employee disengagement. This book proposes a fundamental shift in the focus of the activities of both leadership and management in order to intentionally access the “soul” of the business as a means to create sustainable employee engagement.

Compassionate Capitalism: A Journey to the Soul of Business

Business is the most pervasive and influential force on the planet today. Its activities transcend national and international borders. Its activities are not unduly constrained by financial, political, cultural, ethnic, or religious concerns. The net of this is that business, as a prevalent and important force, has a moral responsibility to guide, enhance, value, and nourish the existence of all that it encounters. In the world today, the absolute opposite of this occurs. Business today seldom assesses the efficacy of its activities through the lens of anything but profit. Traditional capitalism forgets an important variable, that of happiness.

The true purpose of business is to uplift the experience of existing. It is not to make owners wealthy. It is not to produce ever-cheaper goods and services. Compassionate capitalism is an economic system meant to make a lot of money, help a lot of people, and have a lot of fun. It is not to keep an avaricious and toxic economic model afloat. And it is certainly not (with no apology to Milton Friedman) to make a profit.

From our perspective, business is nothing less than a spiritual discipline, it requires the same integrity, commitment, intentionality, courage, discipline, and compassion as any other spiritual discipline. Spiritual disciplines honor life, in all its forms, as having innate and intrinsic value simply because it exists. It’s the honoring of this value—the ennobling of this value—that is called forth when we approach business as a spiritual undertaking. It is the compassionate thing to do.

Three Dimensional Coaching: Moving Passion Into Performance

The source of the word compassion derives from passion, which is from the Ancient Greek verb πάσχω (paskho), which means “”feel keenly, to undergo and experience, to suffer”. Simply put, compassion is the act of being with an individual as they move through the challenges and difficulties of life. This is the role of a coach…to willingly be with our clients as they move to overcome their challenges on the path to becoming more exceptional.

Human beings are multi-dimensional. We inhabit intellectual, physical, emotional, spiritual and linguistic domains that continuously conspire to impact how we experience living and working in the world. It is an obvious statement to assert that human beings are infinitely complex. It therefore stands to reason that our approach as coaches to the development of people should be similarly complex. Any useful coaching model needs to, in some manner, take these facts into account.

Three Dimensional Coaching integrates key parts of three of the most influential coaching models existing today. Most importantly, by using the integrated coaching approach presented in this book, Three Dimensional Coaching provides guidance to the coach to facilitate their client to effectively feel keenly and undergo or experience the variety and depth of human complexity as they move toward their goals.

    He is an International Best Selling Author of “Compassionate Capitalism: A Journey to the Soul of Business” as well as four other books, recognized as one of the world’s top Leadership and Executive Coaches and am featured as one of the World’s Greatest Motivators in the nationally broadcast television series of the same name. He has also been featured in the movie and the book “Think and Grow Rich: The Legacy”.

    His work is focused on the thesis that business, as the most pervasive force on the planet, is charged with taking responsibility for the well being of the whole. His life’s work is dedicated to ensuring that business leaders develop the skills, competency and capacity to lead such an undertaking as it is key to their, their people, and their organizations thriving.

    He is also an Adjunct Professor at China’s Beijing University, a member of the teaching faculty at the American Association for Physician Leadership, and serve as a Board member of the World Business Academy, Solair, Inc., and the Unstoppable Foundation as well as being on the Advisory Boards of the Tokyo based All Nippon Management and Coaching Association and the Beijing based Asia Coaching and Mentoring Association. He has lectured on Enterprise Leadership Development at China’s prestigious Tsing Hua University in Beijing, an active member of the Transformational Leadership Council – an international group of transformational CEOs, thought leaders, writers, humanitarians, film producers and educators. In 2012, he was formally invested as a Knight of the Sovereign Order of St. John of Jerusalem Knights of Malta, the world’s oldest humanitarian organization.
